Police Searching for Suspect After West Hollywood Parking Garage Sexual Assault

Mar 16, 2023

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) officials are searching for a suspect accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a West Hollywood parking garage.

The incident reportedly occurred around 1:30 a.m. Monday morning at the 7600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard. Deputies responded to a report of a sexual predator approaching a victim at a bus bench and forcing her to a parking garage where she was sexually assaulted, according to a report from ABC 7.

The suspect reportedly fled subsequent to the assault, heading southbound on Fuller Avenue.

LASD investigators provided the following physical description of the suspect:

  • Black male
  • Approximately 28 years old
  • 6 feet, 1 inches tall
  • Approximately 210 pounds
  • “Muscular build”
  • Dark-colored eyes
  • A mustache

“[The suspect] was last seen wearing a ski mask, a baseball cap, and a cream-colored sweater with the letters ‘XTC’ worn over a green hoodie along with black pants and white shoes,” ABC 7 reported.

Anyone with information that could help identify the West Hollywood sexual assault suspect is urged to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Special Victims Bureau tip line at 877-710-5273. Emails may also be directed to specialvictimsbureau@lasd.org.

Drugging/Sexual Assault Reported in West Hollywood

Last week, a 42-year-old man was arrested in connection with an alleged drugging, sexual battery, and attempted kidnapping of a woman in West Hollywood, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The LASD confirmed that the incident occurred February 25 at The Abbey Food and Bar in West Hollywood.

“Authorities say a woman reported she had been drugged and sexually assaulted at the nightclub. According to law enforcement, she was drugged by the suspect, Kent Okukporo, and then dragged to a vehicle,” ABC 7 reported.

The victim reportedly escaped with the assistance of security guards, but the suspect fled the scene.

Okukporo reportedly posted bail at $160,000 and was released March 1. He was scheduled to appear in court earlier this week.

The Abbey released the following statement:

“The suspect was arrested because of The Abbey’s well-trained security team. We work closely with law enforcement on these efforts including many undercover operations.”

West Hollywood Nightlife Establishments Issue Date Rape Drink Kits

In August 2022, the city of West Hollywood announced a new initiative to improve nightlife safety.

The City Council approved a plan to purchase and hand out drink-spiking test strips to local bars, restaurants, and patrons in an effort to “drive down the number of sexual assaults happening in the area.”

The testing strips are designed to detect common date rape drugs, including:

  • Rohypnol
  • GHB
  • Ketamine

By placing a drop of one’s drink on the testing strip, a user may confirm whether or not it’s safe. Additionally, users may scan a QR code with safety information.

Distribution of the date rape drug testing strips began last year, with a number of West Hollywood leaders and volunteers canvassing the city and handing out 2,500 kits.

“Councilmembers hosted a meeting Monday evening which included a discussion on nightlife safety at the council chambers,” ABC Los Angeles reported.

3-Year Window Open for California Sexual Assault Survivors to File Claims

Under a new California law – Assembly Bill 2777 (AB 2777) – adult survivors of sexual assault have the opportunity to file civil claims for financial compensation without being barred by the statute of limitations. AB 2777 opens a three-year window for any sexual assault or sex crime which occurred on or after January 1, 2009. From now until December 31, 2026, all adult survivors of California sexual assault may file claims with Dordulian Law Group (DLG).

Accordingly, sexual assault survivors in California may be able to recover various damages through lawsuits, such as:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress/psychological harm
  • Counseling and therapy expenses (past and future)
  • Related medical care costs (past and future)
  • Punitive damages
  • Lost wages and/or diminished future earning capacity
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Prescription drug costs (past and future)

Survivors of sexual assault have rights as well as options when it comes to pursuing justice for a past crime. Filing a sexual assault civil claim with DLG’s experienced attorneys can be a preferred avenue which allows survivors to get justice on their own terms while also obtaining financial compensation for the harm suffered.
