Trevor Noah’s Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Alleges Negligence Caused ‘Permanent’ Injuries

Dec 21, 2021

Late night television host Trevor Noah has filed a medical practice lawsuit against his doctor and a New York hospital alleging negligence in a botched surgery which caused him to “sustain permanent, severe, and grievous injuries,” according to the complaint.

Noah’s lawsuit, filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, alleges the Hospital for Special Surgery (HHS) and orthopedic surgeon Riley Williams III negligently performed exams and surgery. The suit also alleges Noah’s illness and condition were not properly diagnosed, and that he was not properly referred to specialists.

The complaint further contends that both defendants failed to provide appropriate medical treatment and failed to obtain proper consent for treatment.

Noah reportedly received medical care from the defendants named in the medical practice lawsuit at various times between August 25, 2020, and approximately December 17, 2020.

The HHS released a statement calling Noah’s allegations “meritless” and noting they had sent his attorney a “detailed rebuttal to the claims.

The specific nature of Noah’s injury and surgery were not disclosed in the medical malpractice complaint.

The complaint also alleges Noah “sustained severe and painful personal injuries, sustained severe nervous shock, mental anguish, severe emotional distress, and great physical pain,” and that because some of the injuries are permanent, he will “continue to suffer similar damages in the future.” In addition, Noah’s complaint alleges that his injuries caused him to suffer “loss of enjoyment of life” and that he was unable to do his job as host of “The Daily Show” for an extended period of time.

Noah’s attorneys also accused the defendants of acting in a “negligent and careless manner” which “constituted professional negligence,” according to court documents.

Court documents did not indicate whether Noah had sought specific damages in the medical malpractice suit.

In its statement, the Hospital for Special Surgery noted that, “Due to HIPAA we are restricted by law from addressing publicly specific aspects of the treatment of any patient. HSS is committed to excellence in the care we provide to each of the more than 150,000 patients we treat each year. This commitment has made HSS the world’s leading academic medical center specialized in musculoskeletal health, consistently ranked #1 in orthopedics globally and nationally.”
