An armed security guard in Torrance, California, has been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting multiple women while on the job.
The Torrance Police Department issued a statement indicating that an investigation into the security guard revealed that the suspect targeted women who were either homeless or addicted to drugs. The Torrance security guard allegedly coerced at least one woman into sexual activity in exchange for not reporting her for trespassing on private property, according to a Los Angeles Times report.
“Over the course of a few weeks, investigators found out this armed security guard was targeting female victims who were experiencing homelessness or suffering from drug addiction,” the Torrance Police Department said in a press release.
Once the first victim reported being coerced into sexual activity by the security guard, Torrance Police officials were able to identify two additional victims, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“Detectives gathered evidence, identified three separate victims, and made an arrest on December 21, 2022,” the Torrance Police Department’s press release indicated.
Police have not identified the local security guard sexual assault suspect by name and only released a blurred photo in an effort to not compromise the ongoing investigation.
Torrance Police officials are reportedly collaborating with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and reviewing the sexual assault case against the security guard.
The Torrance Police Department has indicated that additional sexual assault survivors who have yet to be identified may have been victimized by the security guard.
“The Torrance Police Department is also requesting the community’s help with identifying any other potential victims,” the press release said. “The Torrance Police Department encourages the community to report all suspicious activities. If you were victimized by this person, please contact our Department.”
Anyone with information related to a sexual assault incident involving the security guard is urged to immediately contact Sergeant Ron Salary, the Torrance Police Department’s Public Information Officer, by phone at 310-618-5688 or by email at rsalary@TorranceCA.gov.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released any additional information.
“Police released no additional details about when the incidents occurred or where the security guard was working at the time. They also declined to answer further questions about the incidents or the suspect,” the Los Angeles Times reported.
Survivors of sexual assault are encouraged to report incidents immediately to local law enforcement officials. Additionally, undergoing a medical examination is recommended to ensure that your health and well-being are addressed.
A standard medical evaluation may be done as well as a rape kit or SANE Exam (conducted by a specialized Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner). SANE Exams can help gather forensic evidence which may be critical in facilitating prosecutors to eventually pursue criminal charges against a sex crimes assailant.
Last year, California launched an online portal enabling sexual assault survivors to track the status of rape kits. The California rape kit online portal provides information on the location and status of sexual assault kits while affording survivors with the ability to access details regarding their cases privately, securely, and electronically.
