Three Los Angeles-Area Cities Found to Have Highest Car Accident Rates

Nov 18, 2020

With the COVID-19 pandemic in full swing, public transportation use is at an all-time low. Accordingly, car accidents have increased, many of which are due to reckless driving which frequently results in catastrophic injuries and even death. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released a report indicating that the rate of fatal crashes between the first and second quarter of 2020 grew from 1.10 to 1.42 deaths per million vehicle miles traveled.

In 2020, drivers are more susceptible to traffic collisions than in years past. Dangerous driving behavior has become more common in the pandemic-era, with some cities being directly impacted. Insurify, a national carrier, recently conducted a study using a database of over 2.5 million car insurance applications. They identified the top 20 U.S. cities with the highest rates of car accidents, and three cities within 100 miles of Los Angeles – Simi Valley, Carlsbad, and Sherman Oaks – made the list.

Additionally, the study found that across all U.S. cities, 12.4% of motorists have an at-fault accident on their record. However, what’s perhaps most alarming about the study is the finding that those 20 cities with the most car accidents actually have 40% more accident-prone drivers than the national average. As this study directly affects Californians, let’s take a look at which cities made the list:
