NFL cornerback Richard Sherman, well-known as a star with the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers, was arrested early Wednesday morning in Washington state. Sherman is currently being held in a Seattle jail while under investigation for a charge of burglary domestic violence, as well as hit-and-run and DUI, Washington authorities confirmed.
Records indicate Sherman, 33, was booked at approximately 6 a.m. at King County Correctional Facility. He was reportedly denied bail.
NBC 4 reported that just before 2 a.m., the Redmond Police Department received a 911 call to report an adult male – a family member who does not live at that residence – outside and attempting to force entry into the home. Redmond Public Information Officer James Perry confirmed the call to reporters at a local press conference.
“Our officers arrived and located an individual who matched the description of the suspect,” Perry said. “They located him outside the house, contacted him, attempted to detain him, and the suspect fought with the officers.”
When officers arrived, they attempted to arrest Sherman, but he reportedly resisted and a struggle ensued. A K-9 team had to be utilized to gain control of Sherman, who was then taken into custody.
Sherman may have suffered a minor dog bite injury in the altercation while struggling with the K-9 police unit during the apprehension.
“He was cleared medically at a hospital before being booked into jail,” Perry said. “So I believe there was some precautionary treatment after being contacted by the dog. I have to believe any injuries were very minor.”
The alleged offense is labeled as “domestic violence” because of the relationship between the parties involved, but authorities clarified that Sherman is not accused of having any physical altercation with anyone inside the home.
“Nobody in the house was injured in any way,” Officer Perry said. “I’m not even sure he made it into the house.”
NBC Sports reported that the domestic violence case is being investigated as a felony, which likely had an impact on Sherman being denied bail.
In a separate incident involving Sherman, NBC News reported that troopers with the Washington State Patrol also responded because he was suspected of crashing his vehicle into a highway cement barrier. Sherman allegedly drove away with popped tires before abandoning the vehicle in a nearby parking lot. He subsequently fled from the scene on foot, eventually arriving at the aforementioned family member’s residence, according to police.

“The registered owner of the vehicle was Richard Sherman,” Sergeant Darren Wright told NBC Sports.
At the private residence, Sherman them attempted to gain entry but was met by police a short time later.
A spokesperson for the Washington State Patrol told NBC News that Sherman is being investigated on suspicion of a hit-and-run and driving while under the influence over the incident.
The state patrol agency obtained a warrant for Sherman’s blood, Sergeant Wright confirmed to NBC Sports. The results of the blood test might not be known for “many months” due to a backlog in testing, Wright said.
Sherman was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2011, helping the team win its first Super Bowl in 2014. He played with the San Francisco 49ers from 2018 to 2020, and is currently a free agent. Sherman also serves as a vice president on the NFL Players Association’s executive board. Following news of Sherman’s arrest and the ensuing investigation, the union released the following statement via Twitter:
