As a survivor of sexual assault, you have options beyond the criminal justice system. California sexual assault survivors may file a civil lawsuit seeking to recover financial compensation from the predator. Filing a civil lawsuit is a means of recovering various losses sustained as a result of a sexual assault. These losses can be both economic and non-economic, such as hospital or medical bills, emotional or psychological trauma, pain and suffering, lost wages, lost earning capacity, therapy or counseling expenses, and more.
