A former employee at an Encinitas middle school was arrested over the weekend over allegations of sexually abusing a 12-year-old.

Omar Hernandez Galeana, 21, who had been employed as a campus supervisor at Diegueño Middle School, was taken into custody Sunday and now faces a total of 12 counts involving sex abuse of two minors – a boy and a girl.

According to officials with the San Diego Sheriff’s Office Child Abuse Unit, someone reported that Omar Galeana met the 12-year-old outside of school hours. An immediate investigation was launched, various media outlets confirmed.

Galeana pleaded not guilty to the felony charges, which include:

  • Forcible lewd acts on a child
  • Furnishing cannabis to a minor under 14
  • Aggravated sexual assault of a minor
  • Contributing to the delinquency of minors by encouraging them to break curfew

According to court documents, the alleged sexual abuse committed by Omar Galeana only involved the female 12-year-old victim.

The alleged off-campus sex crimes incidents occurred on March 23 and 24. Omar Hernandez Galeana worked at Diegueño Middle School for three months. He was fired shortly before a message to parents was sent out Monday morning.

Anne Staffieri, Superintendent of the San Dieguito Union High School District, wrote:

“As always, we are committed to keeping parents and families informed whenever issues arise that may affect students… As this matter is part of an ongoing investigation, we are extremely limited in terms of the information we can share about the former employee and the allegations. This terribly unfortunate situation should not be a discussion on social media as that will not help law enforcement with their investigation, and it serves only to compromise the privacy of those involved.”

Galeana was booked in the Vista Detention Center and has been denied bail.

Speaking to NBC 7 after Galeana’s arraignment, Deputy District Attorney Nereida Bowman said:

“We have one minor who was sexually assaulted, and the other minor who was a victim in this case for the remaining charges on that complaint… He was someone that worked at their school that they knew that they got to know pretty well.”

Bowman added that Omar Galeana is believed to have been communicating with a number of students via WhatsApp – including the two alleged victims.

“He would tell these minors to delete those messages because there were consequences for him,” Bowman told NBC.

Bowman also noted that more victims of Omar Galeana are being sought.

“Additionally, information that we have as part of this investigation is that the defendant is very, very friendly with a lot of other minors located at this middle school,” she said.

If convicted of sexual abuse against a minor, Galeana could face a sentence of 15 years to life.

During arraignment, Judge Francisco Sanchez added a restraining order mandating that, if released, Galeana is “not permitted anywhere near the alleged victims nor able to contact them,” NBC reported.
