How Survivors are Holding Perpetrators Accountable

Apr 20, 2023

The #MeToo movement has led to a wave of women – many prominent and with a devoted following – coming forward to obtain the justice they deserve. In 2020, our founder and president, Sam Dordulian, commented on the recent Harvey Weinstein verdict, calling it a “paradigm shift for sexual assault survivors.

How Survivors are Holding Perpetrators Accountable

“Previously, the problem you would often encounter with high-powered celebrities accused of sexual abuse is that they had access to not only the best defense, but also the press. So they were constantly directing the narrative and essentially tainting the jury pool,” Dordulian said.

“I think what you saw with the Weinstein verdict was this shift where the tendency is now, as it should be, to not only believe survivors who come forward, but also understand that the process is very personal, and it can take a significant number of years before one feels comfortable doing so. I think we still have a great deal of progress to make in terms of reducing sexual abuse and increasing reporting, but we’re continuing to see positive change. And with more and more women coming forward to expose high-profile predators, I think that will only continue,” Dordulian added.

From Harvey Weinstein to Bill Cosby to Woody Allen and Matt Lauer, powerful men have access to the media and wield it to their advantage whenever possible. But, now more than ever before, survivors of sexual assault are coming forward to report their perpetrators and also to file civil lawsuits seeking justice through financial compensation.

DLG’s Sexual Abuse Case Against Former Heavyweight Boxer George Foreman

At Dordulian Law Group (DLG), we aren’t afraid to take on powerful alleged sexual predators and pursue justice on behalf of survivors. One notable case we are currently handling involves former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman. Two of our clients came forward in November 2022 to tell their stories of sexual abuse.

Multiple Women Have Accused George Foreman of Child Sex Abuse. Why Has the Media Given Him a Pass?

Since they spoke out, Foreman has cried “extortion” and claimed that the survivors are lying. Accordingly, we arranged for each woman to undergo a lie detector test with one of the world’s foremost experts in the field (who has, as it happens, also been used by Mr. Foreman’s defense attorney in previous cases). Both of our clients passed the lie detector tests with flying colors. But although we have publicly challenged Foreman to undergo his own polygraph with the same examiner we (and his defense team previously) used, he has yet to even offer so much as a response.

On a related note, a common tactic utilized by accused sexual predators is known as DARVO.

DARVO is an acronym which stands for:

  • Deny
  • Attack, and …
  • Reverse Victim and Offender

The sexual perpetrator or offender may Deny the behavior, Attack the individual doing the confronting, and Reverse the roles of Victim and Offender “such that the perpetrator assumes the victim role and turns the true victim – or the whistle-blower – into an alleged offender,” according to Dr. Jennifer J. Freyd, PhD, of the University of Oregon.

It should be noted that extortion is claim frequently cited by convicted sexual predators, including high-profile individuals such as Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and Guess Jeans co-founder Paul Marciano.

California AB 2777 Opens 3-Year Window for Sexual Assault Lawsuits

Under a new California law known as the Sexual Abuse Cover Up Accountability Act – or Assembly Bill 2777 (AB 2777) – adult survivors of sexual assault have the opportunity to file civil claims for financial compensation without being barred by the statute of limitations. AB 2777 opens a three-year window for any sexual assault or sex crime which occurred on or after January 1, 2009. From now until December 31, 2026, all adult survivors of California sexual assault may file claims with DLG’s experienced sex crimes attorneys.

Sexual assault survivors may be able to recover various damages through AB 2777 lawsuits, such as:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Psychological harm
  • Counseling and therapy expenses (past and future)
  • Related medical care costs (past and future)
  • Punitive damages
  • Lost wages and/or diminished future earning capacity
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Prescription drug costs (past and future)

Filing a sexual assault civil lawsuit can be an empowering option for survivors, allowing you to secure justice on your own terms while also obtaining due financial compensation for the harm suffered.

DLG’s Experience in Helping Sexual Assault Survivors Obtain Justice

Attorney Sam Dordulian previously worked as a sex crimes prosecutor and Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County. With over 100 jury trial victories, he offers sexual assault survivors a level of experience and proven results that simply can’t be matched.

Some of DLG’s recent sexual assault victories include:

  • A multi-million dollar settlement for a woman drugged and raped by a man she had met on a ‘Sugar Daddy’ website. Despite forming a relationship with the man and having consensual sexual relations in the past, the single incident of rape constituted sexual assault and led to the victory. As Sam Dordulian has noted in the past, consent is always mandatory, and rape is always illegal.

“I see a lot of rape survivors who believe that once they begin having a consensual sexual relationship with someone, they’re suddenly no longer capable of being ‘raped’ under the law. It’s as if that earlier consent they had given somehow lasts forever in terms of legality. But consent is mandatory every single time, and there are no exceptions to that rule,” Dordulian said shortly after the multi-million dollar settlement was secured.

  • A $2.25 million settlement for a rideshare rape survivor who was drugged by her driver. Rideshare sexual assault incidents have been increasing recently, with Uber having received more than 6,000 claims in the past two years alone.
  • An undisclosed maximum financial damages award under the eggshell plaintiff rule for a sexual assault involving minimal contact. Despite the incident only entailing an employer putting his arm around our client and asking her to “smile more,” we were able to secure maximum compensation under the eggshell plaintiff rule.

Survivors of sexual assault need to know that they have legal options – and a civil lawsuit with Dordulian Law Group can be a means of obtaining the justice they deserve.
