Stars Prep Academy Coach Chris Flores Convicted of Sexual Assault

Jul 31, 2024

Chris Flores, a well-known youth sports coach in Southern California, was convicted Tuesday of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl and a young woman.

Flores, a former coach and trainer at the Stars Prep Academy in Santa Ana, was found guilty on seven felony counts:

  • Four counts of lewd acts on a child age 14 or 15
  • Two counts of sexual penetration by a foreign object of a victim younger than 16
  • One count of sexual penetration by a foreign object involving a 22-year-old woman

A Superior Court jury reportedly deliberated for several hours before handing down the verdict. Sentencing is scheduled for October 4.

Flores – also known as “Coach Frogg” – was best known for working with a number of prominent high school football players:

  • Bryce Young, a former Mater Dei quarterback who went on to play at Alabama. Young won the Heisman Trophy and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft to the Carolina Panthers
  • DJ Uiagalelei, a former standout quarterback from St. John Bosco who now plays at Florida State
  • NFL player Juju Smith-Schuster
  • NFL player Adoree’ Jackson

The Stars academy, where Flores worked, provides sports performance training for middle school athletes. It is well known in Southern California athletic circles. Flores, a resident of Bellflower, was a co-owner, trainer, and coach at the academy.

Sexual assault accusations against Flores first surfaced in August 2022. He was accused of assaults on a 14-year-old girl in Santa Ana and a 15- year-old girl in Riverside. He was also accused of having sexual relations with the 14-year-old girl throughout 2021 in various parts of Santa Ana, including at a camp at Calvary Chapel.

Following the accusations, the Santa Ana Police Department confirmed the following timeline of the Chris Flores investigation and arrest:

  • The first victim made a video recording of a conversation she had with Flores in 2021.
Flores can be heard asking the victim if she “deleted everything” and asking her to go on a date with him. Detectives inferred that Flores was asking the victim to delete text messages between them. The victim gave a copy of the recording to police who immediately initiated their investigation.
  • Santa Ana Police detectives were subsequently informed that the video recording of the conversation between Flores and the victim was posted on several social media sites and had gone viral.
  • Santa Ana Police detectives identified a second victim, a 15-year-old girl from Irvine, who had made similar allegations against Flores to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department sometime in August 2022.
  • Flores was arrested on August 11, 2022, after Santa Ana Police detectives received information that the suspect was in Bakersfield. Detectives requested assistance from the Bakersfield Police Department and eventually located Flores. Flores was arrested without incident in the area of 2400 K Street in Bakersfield. He was subsequently booked at the Orange County Jail for multiple counts of sexual assault of a minor with bail set at $500,000.00.

Following Tuesday’s verdict, Flores was handcuffed and taken into custody.

ESPN also reported that Flores had been charged with sex crimes in 2009.

According to the report, Flores was charged with raping and sodomizing a 21-year-old woman in Pasadena, California that year. The three counts included:

  • Unlawfully kidnapping and carrying away the woman to allegedly commit rape/sodomy
  • Sodomy by anesthesia or controlled substance
  • Rape by use of drugs
