L.A. County Sheriff Says Fatal Car Accident Numbers ‘Out of Control’

Jun 7, 2021

2020 was a particularly dangerous year for drivers. The stay-at-home orders issued as a result of the coronavirus pandemic meant that roads and highways were virtually empty, with typical traffic and congestion reduced to historic lows. Consequently, many drivers exercised unsafe habits, such as excessive speeding and other forms of reckless driving. These unsafe habits resulted in a significant mileage death rate increase for the year.

In its annual report, the National Safety Council found that the estimated mileage death rate for 2020 was 1.49 deaths per 100 vehicle miles traveled. That’s a 24% increase from the 2019 figures, and it comes at a time when many of us were stuck at home and off the roads. Unfortunately, 2021 may be equally grim in terms of car accident fatalities, specifically in the Antelope Valley area of Los Angeles County.

If you experienced a car accident injury, don’t wait to file a claim. Contact our expert attorneys online or by phone for a free consultation today.

To date, local ABC 7 reported that there have been at least 44 confirmed fatal motor vehicle crashes throughout the Antelope Valley (94 were confirmed in 2020). According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, many of these fatal crashes are due to excessive speeding on empty roads.

“Our fatality numbers throughout the Antelope Valley are out of control,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Traffic Investigator, Matthew Davis, to ABC 7.

The ABC 7 report noted that during the COVID-19 lockdowns “empty roads and freeways led to some drivers feeling like they were on a racetrack.” And as the pandemic has subsided and life is inching closer to normalcy “law enforcement is on a mission in the Antelope Valley to get you to back off pushing the pedal to the metal.

We’re gonna be doing numerous operations all over the valley,” Investigator Davis told ABC 7

“Our goal is to show everybody that we’re there and the reason why we’re doing it is because we believe that if we can decrease the speed, we can change the mindset of everybody who drives in the Antelope Valley. We can effect some change.”

Both the Lancaster and Palmdale Sheriff’s Offices are working with California Highway Patrol (CHP) to catch speeding drivers by setting up speed traps in various Antelope Valley locations. The action comes after some tragic motor vehicle crashes were recently reported.

Big Rig Truck Crash Leaves 2 Women and 2 Children Dead

Last week, a big rig crash involving a car was reported in the Lancaster-area near Avenue G between 30th Street East and 20th Street East, according to the CHP. Two women and two boys were killed in the crash, while a 5-year-old boy was reportedly treated for major traumatic injuries. All of the victims and the injured child were residents of Lancaster, the CHP said.

The car, a Dodge Challenger, was travelling in the wrong direction when it collided with a Peterbilt big rig. The truck driver, 44-year-old Santos D. Torres of Corona, California, sustained minor injuries, according to a local KTLA report.

KTLA also reported that authorities are continuing to investigate why the Dodge Challenger was traveling on the wrong side of the road. Whether or not drugs or alcohol could have played a role has yet to be determined.

In a public statement, the California Highway Patrol declared, “You can help us prevent these senseless deaths by obeying all traffic signs and signals, obeying the speed limit, not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and always wearing your seatbelt.”

How to File a Personal Injury Claim After a Car Accident

As drivers continue exercising unsafe habits on the roads, the potential for being injured in a car accident increases. If you’re injured in a car crash due to another driver speeding (or any type of negligence/carelessness) the resulting medical bills, lost wages, and emotional trauma should not be your responsibility. The at-fault driver should be punished for his or her actions.

One of the best ways to obtain justice and ensure any losses you’ve endured as a result of a car accident are covered is through a personal injury civil lawsuit. By filing a claim, the injured victim can pursue financial compensation for various types of economic and non-economic damages.

Some common damages recovered in personal injury car accident claims include:

Economic Damages:

  • Medical bills and expenses
  • Rehabilitation expenses
  • Physical therapy expenses
  • Lost wages
  • Lost earning capacity

Non-Economic Damages:

  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional trauma
  • Reduced quality of life
  • Compensation for loss of limb or disfigurement

If a fatality occurs as a result of a car accident, the surviving family members and eligible dependents can file a wrongful death lawsuit to recover various damages for funeral and burial expenses, loss of pension, loss of medical benefits, etc.

After a car accident, your physical recovery and well-being are what’s most important. By filing a civil lawsuit to help recover the compensation you deserve, an experienced legal team like Dordulian Law Group (DLG) will handle the stressful details while you focus on getting well.

Do I Need to Hire an Attorney After a Car Accident?

Proving negligence in a car accident case can be a complex process. Negotiating with insurance companies, demonstrating the proper percentage of fault under the law, and fighting to ensure all future medical bills are covered can be difficult, especially if you’re taking on all those responsibilities while injured. The good news is that car accident victims who hire an experienced and dedicated team of attorneys like those at DLG tend to recover higher damages awards.

A study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC) found that settlements were 40% higher when the injured party had hired a private attorney to handle their claim. Additionally, IRC research confirms that the average insurance payout is 3.5 times higher for clients with private attorney representation. And 85% of all money paid by insurance companies for bodily injuries (like those often sustained in car accidents) goes to clients who have secured qualified private legal representation.

So, if you hire an experienced private car accident attorney like DLG’s Sam Dordulian to handle your claim, you’re statistically more likely to receive a 40% greater settlement and 3.5 times higher insurance payout. But beyond the general statistics, there are a number of other reasons why you should consider choosing DLG to handle your car accident claim.
