Driver fatigue

Driving a truck can be a very high pressure, high stress job. Trucking companies will often require drivers to deliver goods to a destination within a short period of time. That means truckers are constantly driving long distances with few breaks and little rest.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving is a widespread problem affecting both local roads and major highways. Distracted driving includes any activity that diverts attention away from the primary task of driving.

Speeding and overtaking

Because of the pressure to meet tight deadlines, a truck driver might drive faster than what's appropriate for a vehicle of that size. They also might drive at excessive speeds beyond what is suitable for specific road conditions. If a driver feels his job is at risk if goods aren't delivered at a certain time, he is more likely to speed along the route.

Alcohol and drugs

Unfortunately, the trucking industry has a high rate of alcohol and drug abuse. Some truckers use amphetamines and cocaine to stimulate themselves and stay awake while driving long distances.
